Ilham Aliyev was re-elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan with 87.34 % of votes as the result of the presidential election of 2008.
Presidential election of October 15, 2008 was the sixth official election to the post of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Voter turnout was 75.64 % (3,700,634 citizens) in the election. Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party, Ilham Aliyev, was the candidate of the party. Mr. Ilham Aliyev won the democratic election monitored by local and foreign observers with 87.34 % of votes for the second term. Results of the election coincided with forecasts of foreign experts and organizations that held “exit-polls”. Presidential election of October 15 was evaluated as the triumph of democratic reforms in Azerbaijan by the reviews of observer missions of different international organizations and countries that monitored the election. The election that reflected the people’s will, once again demonstrated their trust and confidence in Mr. Ilham Aliyev.
On the whole, the spectacular and confident victory of the candidate of the New Azerbaijan Party, Mr. Ilham Aliyev with the support of the vast majority of population was directly connected to Azerbaijan’s high economic development and improvement of peoples’ well-being. The New Azerbaijan Party conducted a successful election campaign by fulfilling its duties in a very short period and very efficient manner during this election.
