Baku hosts 5th meeting of European Olympic Committees Coordination Commission

The fifth meeting of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) Coordination Commission has been held in Baku.

Azerbaijan`s first lady, chairperson of the Baku 2015 First European Games Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva attended the meeting.

The EOC Coordination Commission hailed the preparations for the Baku 2015 First European Games.

President of the European Olympic Committees Patrick Hickey stressed the importance of the meeting of the European Olympic Committees Coordination Commission. He stressed that a strong team of professionals work here in order to ensure excellent organization of the European Games.

Chairperson of the Baku 2015 First European Games Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva addressed the event. Mrs. Aliyeva said the First European Games would be covered by more that 600 international and local journalists. On June 10, an event will be organized for foreign journalists. Some 43 companies were given the broadcast rights, and the Games will be aired in more than 100 countries. More than 16,000 volunteers have applied to the Organizing Committee.  

The chairperson of the First European Games Organizing Committee noted that the government invested large funds in transport infrastructure. The first lady said the opening and closing ceremonies would be unforgettable.

Mehriban Aliyeva noted that supporting sports and the Olympic Movement was one of main priorities of Azerbaijan, and hailed the achievements of Azerbaijani athletes.

Chairman of the EOC Coordination Commission Spyros Capralos praised the achievements of the Commission in recent months.

He said the European Games would be an historically important event. Spyros Capralos also hailed sports infrastructure created in Azerbaijan and preparations for the tournament. He noted that important decisions would be adopted during the two-day discussions in Baku.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov said the sportsmen who succeed at the Games would be presented with specially designed medals.

Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015 Simon Clegg noted that apart from foreigners, local specialists also were involved in the preparatory work.

A documentary highlighting preparations for the Baku 2015 was demonstrated at the event.
